BACK TO SCHOOL UPDATE – YKHC’S FORMAL RECOMMENDATIONS FOR SCHOOL DISTRICTS
FROM SUPERINTENDENT HANKINS
February 18, 2021
Dear parents, students, and the entire LKSD learning community,
I want to share with you the latest guidance from the Yukon-Kuskokwim Health Corporation (YKHC) for safely returning to in-person instruction that was provided to all regional school districts yesterday. The new formal recommendations for school districts are attached to this letter and are also posted on the LKSD website. These recommendations are based on the latest guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that was released on February 12, 2021. Please do review and familiarize yourself with this new guidance.
Please know the district is extremely excited with moving forward to bring students back to school. Yesterday afternoon, district administration met with all school principals to discuss these formal recommendations and principals will be meeting with teachers and staff in the next few days. The district has already begun the process of reviewing our current mitigation strategies, utilizing the latest guidance to strengthen these strategies to ensure that all necessary safety measures are in place. District administration will be meeting with YKHC on Monday, February 22, 2021 to discuss these formal recommendations in greater detail and strategies moving forward. I will provide an update next week on the district’s plans for re-opening.
You will be hearing from your school in the coming week regarding your learning preference for your child – hybrid or remote learning. We want to ensure that our students and families are provided with the learning option that they are most comfortable with.
As we are beginning to see case levels in our region drop, it is important to keep following public health guidance - wearing a mask, ensuring good hand hygiene, keeping social distance, and limiting your interactions with people outside your immediate household, so that we can continue this downward trend. We’re all in this together.
I look forward to seeing students back in classrooms soon!
Sincerely,
Kimberly Hankins
Superintendent
