Robotics team presents their plans at a school assemblyGot Water?

The C.R.A.N.E.S. (crazy robotic, awesome, nerdy, elementary students) surveyed GJE students and found that 60% of students surveyed do not like the school's water. 80% bring their own water to school. 50% worry about drinking school water.

So the CRANES (Sheldon, Vjosa, Jerralyn, Florina, Kennedy, Brad, Nick, Julian, Ellis and Drini) decided to do something about it. They interviewed Mr. Eisen and Mr. Harris, our school district water plant workers and learned that school water is not filtered. School water was tested and the results were low in iron and high in chlorine.

Students started researching filtering fountains and found one on sale with a bottle filler. The fountain has a filter in it and it tells when the filter needs changing. Students talked to Mr. Dave Christianson, the head of maintenance for the district, who really liked their idea and agreed to fund the rest of the $946 fountain if students raised $450.

Students sold tickets for the JEDC state robotics fundraiser, and were able to raise enough money to cover their part of the fountain.

They shared their plans at a school assembly this month to an appreciative student body. We are all looking forward to cleaner water in our school!

Way to go CRANES for advocating for positive change in your school!
